About the series:
The exhibition entails my multimedia explorations, utilizing explosive and organic forms to mirror my autobiographical journey. I became what I thought I needed to be for my family, children, as trained by the world around me. Due to societal constructs, I was trapped in a constant continuum of expectations. I am finally challenging the emotional darkness, in this recent body of work. Influenced by my passion for archeology and as a former Park Superintendent, I found the tools from my past to heal the trauma and reclaim my story. Created initially at MOTHRA Art Residency on Toronto Island alongside my children in March 2023, these spherical paintings and works on paper displayed in an immersive wall installation play with vibrant colours and pulse feelings of freedom.
I am drawn to symbols evoking childhood and the feminine. In these recent works, abstraction rebuilt my trust in the artistic process. The palette, shapes and forms bring to mind hope and the immensity of the Universe. I created alongside my children at times, which has contributed to the healing of my own childhood as they are rewarded with celebrating their innocence. The shared creative process has developed a layer of self-awareness, love and acceptance in my role as caretaker.
