Disappearing Monarchs: Echoes of Resilience and Loss
Disappearing Monarchs
“Disappearing Monarchs”
Installation, 250 acrylic & linocut prints on sustainably sourced wood
2024
Monarchs are considered keystone species in their ecosystem, their well-being an indicator of the environment's health. In parallel, the installation reflects on the vital role of mothers as keystone figures in our society, nurturing families and communities. When I fell into darkness as a mother, I turned to creating art that reflects my own journey of resilience.
Created at Gibraltar Art Centre, part of MOTHRA Art Residency in 2024 and presented in May 2024 at Artist Project, Toronto and Museo de Arte de Mazatlan in Mexico in February-March 2025.

Installation, 250 ink & linocut prints on sustainably sourced wood
Monarchs are considered keystone species in their ecosystem, their well-being an indicator of the environment's health. In parallel, the installation reflects on the vital role of mothers as keystone figures in our society, nurturing families and communities. When I fell into darkness as a mother, I turned to creating art that reflects my own journey of resilience. This piece was presented at Artist Project 2024 and first conceived at an art residency at Gibraltar Point Art Centre at MOTHRA with my children and other artist parents. It speaks to the loss of habitat and monarchs as keystone species disappearing from the ecosystem and its link to mothers mental health as keystone figures in our society. If a mother is not doing well, there's a ripple effect within her family and community - just like monarchs, if she is not well, we know her whole family system is suffering. Resilience and strength in community brings hope to the viewer. The installation has been a powerful way for me to find solace and inspire myself and others to embrace change. Butterflies become liquid in their chrysalis before transforming into a beautiful being that can travel incredible distances.
