Venom + Bloom
Exploring the tension between danger and beauty

Venom & Bloom explores the tension between beauty and resilience in nature, weaving together themes of motherhood, femininity, and transformation. Through paintings and ceramics, I focus on Lady Slipper orchids and snakes—two recurring symbols in my practice.

Lady Slipper orchids are rare and cannot be transplanted, thriving only in specific environments. Their soft, almost flesh-like petals resemble the human form, evoking femininity and bodily connection. I first encountered these orchids on walks with my children, moments of quiet observation that deepened my appreciation for their fleeting presence. An Ojibway story tells of a girl who braved the snow to bring medicine to her village, her footprints giving rise to these flowers—a story of sacrifice, care, and strength, much like motherhood itself.

Snakes, appearing throughout this collection, hold a dual symbolism. They represent fear and danger but also transformation, growth, and renewal. In my professional life, I protect endangered snakes in a nature reserve, an experience that informs my art. Snakes shed their skin to grow, mirroring personal evolution and the complexities of womanhood—nurturing, enduring, and constantly reshaping.

Inspired by Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this collection also reflects the responsibility of protecting something fragile. The prince’s devotion to his rose speaks to the way we tend to the things that shape our identity, just as orchids exist only in their natural conditions.

These ideas take form through intuitive watercolor and ink paintings, where soft pink backgrounds contrast with bold black and chrome details on deep black surfaces. The ceramic works echo this balance—delicate yet firm, revealing intricate textures. Venom & Bloom invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with nature, transformation, and the unseen forces that shape us.
